Getting Around

By Taxi

Taxis are plentiful in Chisinau, but can sometimes be difficult to find. Some taxis will stop if hailed from the curbside, but many will not. Alternatively, look for taxis parked near busy street corners or areas with shops or restaurants. Since there is no standard taxi color, it can sometimes be difficult to identify a taxi; so look for taxis clearly marked as such and bearing their company's telephone number - a five digit number beginning in 14 (some independent operators' cars will be marked only by a "taxi" sign on the top of their vehicle). Most hotels, restaurants, or cafes will call you a taxi if asked.

You can also call a taxi yourself, but not all operators speak English. When you call for a taxi, you will need to say where you are and where you wish to go, and leave a phone number. They will call you back usually within about 2 minutes to let you know which car is coming and how long it will take for it to get there. A taxi usually arrives within 5-8 minutes.

Moldovan taxis may or may not have fare meters which may or may not function. Fares within Chisinau range from 25-40 lei depending upon distance travelled, regardless of the number of passengers. Fares for journeys within the city center should cost 25 lei. Fares from the city center to the airport will cost a bit more, typically 100-150 lei, especially if originating from a hotel.

By trolley bus & Bus

By trolley bus & bus: Within Chisinau, trolley buses, which run on overhead electric lines, and buses are convenient and inexpensive means of getting around. Established routes crisscross the city on most major streets. Passengers must board and disembark at marked stops. Buses stop at all stops, running regularly at 5-10 minute intervals until from early morning until late at night. Route maps for trolley buses (Тролеибусы) and buses (Автобусы) are available here. The trolley bus fare is 2 lei per ride and the bus fare 3 lei per ride. Pay the fare to the ticket agent on the bus once you board (Don’t worry, they will find you if you can’t find them). Exact change is recommended but not required.
